Today, I’m focusing on a feature of my Substack community: the From the Pure Land subscriber chat. I’ll be opening discussions about spirituality, starting with a chat thread on the subject of post-religion:
The cultural and social condition in which traditional religious frameworks no longer serve as the central organizing principle of society, yet religious influences, values, and spiritual expressions continue to exist in transformed ways. This does not mean atheism or the absence of religion but rather a complex reconfiguration of how spirituality and values operate in contemporary life.
That’s because later today, I’ll be interviewing Jordan Bates, whose popular Substack blog Future of Wisdom explores it and other ways to rescue spiritual life in the West. I’ll have the video posted by the end of the day (New York time). Oh, and by next week, I expect to post a video of…(drumroll, please)…me. I’ve asked a brilliant but not yet famous interviewer to grill me about why I think a progressive form of Buddhism might be the answer. Stay tuned.
Substack’s chat conversation space is exclusively for subscribers—like a group chat or live hangout. I’ll post thoughts and questions, and you can jump into the discussion.
How to get started
Get the Substack app by clicking this link or the button below. New chat threads won’t be sent sent via email, so turn on push notifications so you don’t miss conversation as it happens. You can also access chat on the web.
Open the app and tap the Chat icon. It looks like two bubbles in the bottom bar, and you’ll see a row for my chat inside.
That’s it! Jump into my thread to say hi, and if you have any issues, check out Substack’s FAQ.
From the Pure Land has thousands of readers and subscribers in 40 U.S. states and 22 countries, and the podcast has thousands of listeners in 55 countries.
Consider the generous act of paying for your subscription even though you’ll receive the same regular content as those with a free subscription. For $5 a month or $50 a year, you’ll contribute to Mel’s expenses and see parts of his book The New Middle Way as it progresses.
