How to Celebrate World Meditation Day
Not with a bottle of champagne, but one flute wouldn't hurt
Today is World Meditation Day, and into my email came a reminder about an event led by my teacher, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, which I've been recommending to a friend. Although I’ve taken many “more advanced” teachings given by Rinpoche, I’ve benefited substantially from this workshop, which is perfect for beginners to meditation, regardless of their spiritual background, or lack thereof.
What especially caught my attention was the language in the emailed reminder. It shouldn’t have surprised me that the words expressed what I’ve come to believe deeply after my 40 years of Buddhist practice reached fruition in recent years with Rinpoche’s teachings and flowed out of me and into a book. It needn’t take you as long, but here’s a great way to begin, or to refresh, your practice:
Here’s more information and an opportunity to register. The Zoom workshop will be held on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern U.S. time, and until 1 p.m. the following day. The timing is fortuitous because 1 p.m. on June 1 is the starting time for another Zoom event:
Don’t tell Rinpoche I revealed this😀, but recordings of his workshops are made available afterwards to those who registered. So, if you want to take a break from his workshop before the start of my book-launch non-party, the Middle Way to the Pure Land, you’ll be able to see and hear what you missed a few days later. (Oh, and a recording of my event will also be available to registrants.)
I’m expecting meditation teacher and musician Timo Spekkens; Dominique Side, author of the soon-to-be-released A New Way of Seeing; and my dharma brother Michael Rey, a practitioner of Native-American and Sufi spirituality, to join my spiritual friend Paula Davis and me in leading the program, which will include guided meditations.
You can register here for the Middle Way to the Pure Land.
The New Middle Way: A Buddhist Path Between Secular and Ossified - Enlightenment for Regular Folks is available from Amazon.
